The Sports Junkies have been the talk of D.C. since debuting on the radio dial 23 years ago. “The Junkies” bring a regular-guy feel to the local sports scene, and mix in pop culture references, current events discussions, their personal lives, and their own trademark lingo.
J.P. Flaim, John “Cakes” Auville and Eric Bickel have been best pals since kindergarten and grew up within a block of each other in Bowie, Md. They hooked up with Jason Bishop in high school. A few years after college, the “SportsJunkies” had a cable access television show.
In 1996, WJFK-FM radio decided to give them a shot on the weekends and just one year later, “The Junkies” were offered a full-time slot every weeknight. The Junkies quickly climbed to the top of the ratings and just two years later were nationally syndicated.
From that point on it has been nothing but major successes for The Junkies. Chosen to replace “The Howard Stern Show” in 2006, they were able to nearly double Howard’s ratings within the first six months. Their program was named the 6th biggest sports show in America on Radio Ink’s 2017 list.
The Sports Junkies joined Sports Radio 965FM and 850AM in 2019. “We are thrilled to bring the Sports Junkies to Hampton Roads and add them to our already stellar lineup,” station owner Bob Sinclair remarked. “The show has been one of the best sports programs in the country for over 20 years and provides amazing coverage of the Redskins, Capitals, Nationals, Wizards and more. And with so many of our listeners being fans of those teams, they will fit in perfectly here in the 757.”
